Where volunteer experience counts most

Data shows some cities put more stock in volunteer experience than others

Yesterday our CEO Kieran Snyder blogged about how much volunteer work the staff here at Textio does of their own initiative: everything from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America to King County Search and Rescue to Rainier Scholars. Obviously volunteer work is an important value for Textios, so I thought we should dig into our data set of 50 million job posts and hiring outcomes to see where volunteer experience counts the most.

Last month we posted some stats for Washington, DC showing that “unpaid experience” and “volunteer work” were two of the top-performing phrases for filling roles quickly in that town. And as you might expect, DC comes out at #1 on the list of cities below. Seattle shows up at #3, so apparently Textio is not the only shop in town where people value volunteer experience.

Here are the top 10 places where job posts fill faster than average when they ask for volunteer experience:

  1. Washington, DC
  2. Chicago, IL
  3. Seattle, WA
  4. Salt Lake City, UT
  5. Cleveland, OH
  6. Dallas, TX
  7. Miami, FL
  8. Boston, MA
  9. Portland, OR
  10. Honolulu, HI
